Goldfish are especially well-suited for smaller aquaponics systems but can thrive in an aquaponics system of any size. goldfish are known as a shy fish. because of this quirkiness, they require plant cover to breed.. Goldfish make the ideal aquaponics fish since they produce and eat a large amount of excretion, which provides plenty of nitrate for all of the plants. they are also a fairly hardy type of fish, depending on which species you select, and they can fit the job perfectly.. So like title says i recently decided to remove my tropical fish from my small aquaponic setup and get some goldfish. my setup consist of a 40 gallon tank for the fish with a 30 gallon grow bed that's full of hydroton(clay balls).. The fish and plants you select for your aquaponic system should have similar needs as far as temperature and ph. there will always be some compromise to the needs of the fish and plants but, the closer they match, the more success you will have..
